English Subject Lead Networks
These online termly networks will provide opportunities for you to:
- Keep up to date with DfE/national developments and initiatives
- Discuss implications for own schools and prioritise next steps
- Receive informed advice on how to lead English across the school
- Address key issues and raise attainment
- Hear from guest speakers and share best practice
- Explore newly developed, ‘tried and tested’ resources
- Engage in discussions and practical activities to develop the role of Subject Lead
Please note – there is a choice of dates for each term’s Network. Please select your first choice when booking – places are on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

An introduction to First Class Phonics
Due to current restrictions, all our training sessions will now be conducted ‘virtually’.
This short Zoom session will introduce you to the First Class Phonics scheme.
During the webinar, we will show you:
- what makes First Class Phonics ‘first class’
- why schools are choosing First Class Phonics
- how First Class Phonics planning and progression can improve teaching
- how First Class Phonics resources will improve learning
- the impact that First Class Phonics has had on teaching and learning in other schools

Preparing for a Reading Deep Dive
This online course will support English Subject Leads to prepare for an Ofsted ‘deep dive’ in reading.
Over the three sessions, we will help you to:
- understand what a ‘deep-dive’ in reading involves
- explore the importance of early reading including phonics provision and attainment
- develop your whole school curriculum for reading for purpose and pleasure
- audit the quality of practice and provision across the school
- develop an effective action plan for reading
- use the course materials to inform any school INSET
- use suggested gap tasks to inform your understanding

Developing a whole school approach to Handwriting
This online course will support English Subject Leads to develop the teaching of handwriting in your school. We will help you to:
- audit current practice
- make informed decisions on handwriting styles, progression, timetables, resources
- plan how to support teachers to make links between handwriting, phonics and spelling
- plan staff meeting/s
- decide on impact measures
- Suitable audience: English Subject Leads

Leading on Phonics – Support for Phonics Leads
This online training and support will help you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to lead on phonics. We will focus on the following:
- Key priorities for teaching and learning in phonics
- How to use data analysis to support effective action planning
- How to support Year 2 teachers to achieve success in Autumn 2 Check
- Interventions – early identification and effective intervention
- How to lead on effective Catch-up and Keep up for all
