English Subject Leader Courses
All the courses below will be conducted either via Zoom or face-to-face. This will be clearly specified in each of the course descriptions.
English Subject Lead Networks (Face-to-Face)
These Networks will be face-to-face meetings at St. John’s Church Centre in Dukinfield.
These termly networks will provide opportunities for you to:
- Keep up to date with DfE/national developments and initiatives
- Discuss implications for own schools and prioritise next steps
- Receive informed advice on how to lead English across the school
- Address key issues and raise attainment
- Hear from guest speakers and share best practice
- Explore newly developed, ‘tried and tested’ resources
- Engage in discussions and practical activities to develop the role of Subject Lead.
Suitable Audience: English Subject Leads, SMT.
Face-to-Face Sessions
Dates & times:
- AUTUMN: 18th October 2024, 1.00pm – 3.30pm
- SPRING: 24th January 2025, 1.00pm – 3.30pm
- SUMMER: 2nd May 2025, 1.00pm – 3.30pm
- Number of sessions: 3 x 2 ½ hour sessions
- Venue: John’s Church Centre, Vicarage Drive, Dukinfield SK16 5HZ
- Price: £90 + VAT per delegate for one Network; £240 + VAT per delegate for all three Networks if all three are booked and paid for on one invoice which will be issued in October 2024. Price includes refreshments and hard copies of resources needed during the session.

Preparing for a Reading Deep Dive (Zoom)
This course will support English Subject Leads to prepare for an Ofsted ‘deep dive’ in reading.
During this course we will help you to:
- Understand what a ‘deep-dive’ in reading involves
- Audit current practice and provision and identify key next steps for your school
- Develop an effective action plan for Reading
- Explore the importance of early reading and phonics for all children at the early stages of learning to read
- Develop your whole school curriculum for developing reading comprehension
- Develop a Reading for Pleasure culture and develop diversity in reading materials
- Use the key messages from Ofsted and the revised Reading Framework
- Plan school INSET using the course materials.

Reading for Pleasure (Zoom)
During this course, we will explore why Reading for Pleasure is so important and how developing a love of reading will impact on children’s success in education and future life chances. We will provide guidance on how to:
- Develop a Reading for Pleasure culture in your school
- Audit current practice and identify key next steps for your school
- Develop a Reading for Pleasure action plan
- Use the key messages from Ofsted and the revised Reading Framework
- Improve the range, quality and relevance of reading materials in all year groups
- Make Reading for Pleasure a daily priority in every classroom
- Increase the provision of books to reflect diversity and develop empathy
- Engage every member of the school community.

Developing an Oracy-rich Curriculum in Primary Schools (Face-to-Face Only)
During this Face-to-Face course, we will look at recent research on the the impact of oracy-rich curriculums. We will explore why Oracy is so important and the impact it has on success in education and future life chances. We will provide guidance on how to:
- Use current research and published documents to identify whole school priorities
- Look at the progression of Oracy skills from EYFS to Year 6
- Identify key areas of the English National Curriculum that develop Oracy
- Carry out an audit of current practice
- Establish ways to build more opportunities for all aspects of Oracy across the wider curriculum
- Make Oracy a whole school priority
- Write an Action Plan for your school
