This on-line course will support English Subject Leads in developing your subject-specific ‘eye’ so that you are more able to evaluate and develop the effectiveness of reading and phonics in your school.

During this course we will help you to:

• Understand what being ‘Ofsted ready’ means for reading and phonics
• Review recent DfE and Ofsted advice on phonics and reading
• Audit the quality of practice and provision across the school
• Explore the importance of early reading and phonics for all children at the early stages of learning to read
• Evaluate your whole school reading curriculum, including reading within other subject areas
• Develop your school’s approach to reading for pleasure and ‘reflecting realities’
• Develop an effective action plan for reading and phonics, using suggestions and advice from the course on how to improve teaching and learning
• Plan school INSET using the course materials.

Suitable audience: English Subject Leads and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead or is expecting an Ofsted Inspection in the new two years.
