Leading on Writing in KS2 (Zoom)

This online course is designed to equip English Subject Leaders with the knowledge and tools to lead strategic improvement in writing across KS2. Rooted in the latest research and recommendations from Ofsted English reports and the new Writing Framework, and in line with the new Ofsted Framework, this course focuses on establishing a coherent, evidence-informed approach to writing instruction from Year Three through to Year Six.

We will provide guidance on how to:

  • Use current research and published documents to identify priorities
  • Carry out an audit of current practice and write an action plan
  • Ensure consistency and high expectations in the teaching of writing from Y3 to Y6
  • Prioritise foundational skills of letter formation, handwriting, phonics and spelling
  • Identify barriers to success and explore effective teaching approaches, including Keep up and also Catch up
  • Develop explicit teaching of grammar and punctuation using a range of strategies to practise and embed sentence level skills, and ensure application into writing
  • Develop composition skills including planning, drafting, revising, editing
  • Build a culture of writing for pleasure and purpose
  • Support all pupils to build stamina, engagement, and independence as writers
  • Develop teacher subject knowledge, lead CPD and support teachers.

    Whether your school is refining its current approach for teaching writing in KS2, or undertaking a more ambitious shift, this course will support you in leading impactful and sustainable change.

    Suitable audience:  English Subject Leads, KS2 Leads and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead or is expecting Ofsted in the next two years.
