How to use a Quality Text to Plan and Teach an Effective Narrative Unit in Year 2 (Zoom)
During the course, we will take you through the process of planning an effective narrative unit – ready to implement in the classroom. We will provide a model plan that you can adapt to suit the needs of your children, plus appropriate teaching resources. You will be able to apply the strategies from this course to plan other narrative units, using quality texts.
During the course, we will show you how to:
- Use a high-quality children’s book to engage and motivate children to read and write
- Set appropriate objectives for the unit
- Follow an effective teaching sequence
- Use the reading week to teach decoding skills and oral and written comprehension skills
- Use oral retelling to support writing
- Teach basic skills and grammar in the context of the story
- Use modelled writing and focused group work
- Introduce independent proof-reading.
Suitable audience: Teachers in Year 2. This course is particularly suited to ECTs, teachers new to Year 2 and teachers who want to improve their teaching of narrative writing.
