How to use a Quality Text to Plan and Teach an Effective Narrative Unit in Year 3 (Zoom)

During the course, we will take you through the process of planning an effective narrative unit – ready to implement in the classroom. We will provide a model plan that you can adapt to suit the needs of your children, plus appropriate teaching resources. You will be able to apply the strategies from this course to plan other narrative units, using quality texts.

We will help you to:

  • Use a high-quality children’s book to engage and motivate children to read and write
  • Discuss how to set appropriate objectives for the unit
  • Plan an effective teaching sequence
  • Use the reading week to teach decoding skills and comprehension
  • Support independent planning skills using ‘boxing up’
  • Plan and teach vocabulary, grammar and punctuation in context
  • Develop use of modelled writing and focused group work
  • Develop children’s composition skills as well as independent proof-reading, editing and improving skills.

Suitable audience: Teachers in Year 3.  This course is particularly suited to ECTs, teachers new to Year 3 and teachers looking for some new ideas to refresh and revitalise their teaching of narrative writing.

This course has really given me the confidence to change the way I teach writing.  I really needed Jane’s advice on replanning my units.

Such a brilliant course!  I love all the resources and ideas and I can’t wait to use them with my class.

As someone new to Y6, I was really worried about getting my class to ‘Expected’!  Jane has given me a really clear plan to follow for the rest of this year – definitely feeling more positive now!
