Collecting Evidence to Achieve Expected in Writing in Year 4 (Zoom)
This online course will help you to plan and teach effective writing sessions that will support your children to meet the age-related expectations for the end of Year Four and help them to be ready for UKS2.
We will help you to:
- Look at the National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Year 4 including Appendices 1 and 2 and identify key areas for writing (both composition and transcription skills)
- Provide suggestions for quality texts and ‘real-life’ experiences that will motivate even the most reluctant writers
- Select strategies and resources to overcome barriers e.g. lack of ‘staying power’, engagement and motivation
- Revisit and ‘re-teach’ essential skills in vocabulary, grammar and punctuation
- Develop children’s transcription skills – identify and overcome barriers to success in spelling and handwriting
- Develop children’s independent composition skills using ‘boxing up’
- Plan and teach exciting and motivating ‘short bursts’ of writing designed to give opportunities to develop skills as well as providing a range of independent writing evidence covering fiction and non-fiction
- Develop an effective plan to collect writing evidence for internal moderation.

This course has really given me the confidence to change the way I teach writing. I really needed Jane’s advice on replanning my units.
Such a brilliant course! I love all the resources and ideas and I can’t wait to use them with my class.
As someone new to Y6, I was really worried about getting my class to ‘Expected’! Jane has given me a really clear plan to follow for the rest of this year – definitely feeling more positive now!
