This on-line course will support English Subject Leads to get ready for the new-style ‘ungraded’ Ofsted inspections with Focus Areas. What does it mean to be Ofsted Ready for the Focus Area of Early English (and Maths)?

During this course we will help you to:

• Understand what the term ‘Early English’ means – teaching children who are at the early stages of reading, writing and oracy, regardless of age
• Review recent DfE and Ofsted advice on the teaching of phonics, reading, writing, communication and language, oracy
• Explore the importance of foundational knowledge
• Develop your school’s approach to reading and writing for pleasure
• Evaluate your whole school English curriculum, including oracy, reading and writing within other subject areas
• Audit the quality of practice and provision across the school, including books that reflect diversity
• Develop an effective action plan for English
• Plan school INSET using the course materials.

Suitable audience: English Subject Leads and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead or is expecting an Ofsted Inspection in the next two years.
