Developing Reading – Leading on Whole School Improvement (Zoom)

This online course is designed to equip English Subject Leaders with the knowledge and tools to lead strategic, whole-school improvement in reading. Rooted in the latest research, the course focuses on establishing a coherent, evidence-informed approach to reading instruction from EYFS through to Year 6.

We will provide guidance on how to:

  • Use current research and published documents to identify whole school priorities
  • Carry out an audit of current practice and provision, plus write an Action Plan
  • Prioritise the teaching of early reading and phonics for all children at the early stages of learning to read
  • Develop a range of effective strategies for teaching fluency
  • Develop a holistic approach to the teaching of all aspects of comprehension
  • Develop your school’s approach to reading for pleasure and ‘reflecting realities’
  • Develop your whole school reading curriculum, including reading within other subject areas
  • Develop teacher subject knowledge about how children learn to read and knowledge of children’s books

Whether your school is refining its current approach or undertaking a more ambitious shift, this course will support you in leading impactful and sustainable change.

Suitable audience: English Subject Lead and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead or is looking for fresh guidance to update the teaching of reading.
