This online course supports subject leaders in understanding and delivering a consistent, effective approach to handwriting across the whole school. The training focuses on practical strategies, clear expectations, and the shared routines that help pupils develop fluent, legible handwriting that supports their wider writing success.

We will provide guidance on how to:

• Audit current practice and develop an action plan for handwriting
• Develop subject knowledge of all staff regarding foundational skills
• Ensure a strong start in EYFS with a focus on developing gross and fine motor skills alongside letter formation sessions
• Make informed decisions on schemes, handwriting styles, progression, timetables, resources
• Build teachers’ confidence in teaching handwriting systematically and consistently
• Strengthen understanding of how handwriting fluency supports writing stamina, spelling and composition
• Support teachers in identifying and addressing barriers to handwriting development.

Suitable audience:  English Subject Lead and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead or is looking for a new approach.
