How to Plan and Teach an Effective Non-Fiction Unit in Year 4 (Zoom)

During the course, we will take you through the process of planning an effective non-chronological report unit – ready to implement in the classroom.  We will provide a model plan that you can adapt to suit the needs of your children, plus appropriate teaching resources. You will be able to apply the strategies from this course to plan other non-fiction units.

We will help you to:

  • Use a high-quality picture book as a stimulus for writing a non-chronological report and to provide engaging purpose and audience
  • Use a high-quality non-chronological text as a model text (WAGOLL)
  • Use this model text to develop understanding of the text type – purpose, audience, form, structure, language features and vocabulary
  • Use this model text to develop reading skills – decoding skills comprehension (oral and written)
  • Plan an effective teaching sequence with a clear outcome
  • Develop planning skills by using ‘boxing up’ strategy
  • Plan and teach vocabulary, grammar and punctuation in context
  • Develop children’s composition skills as well as developing independent proof-reading and editing skills.

Suitable audience: Teachers in Year 4. This course is particularly suited to ECTs, teachers new to Year 4 and teachers looking for some new ideas to refresh and revitalise their teaching of non-fiction writing.

This course has really given me the confidence to change the way I teach writing.  I really needed Jane’s advice on replanning my units.

Such a brilliant course!  I love all the resources and ideas and I can’t wait to use them with my class.

As someone new to Y6, I was really worried about getting my class to ‘Expected’!  Jane has given me a really clear plan to follow for the rest of this year – definitely feeling more positive now!
