How to Teach Writing in an Effective Narrative Unit in Year 1 (Zoom)
During the course, we will develop your understanding of how to teach writing in Year One. We will demonstrate how the key recommendations of the new ‘Writing Framework’ can be effectively implemented through an engaging unit of work. We will provide a model plan that you can adapt to suit the needs of your children, plus appropriate teaching resources. You will be able to apply the strategies from this course to plan other effective narrative units of work, using quality texts.
During the course, we will show you how to:
- Reading, writing and oracy for pleasure and purpose
- Engagement by using a high-quality picture book
- Transcription skills (handwriting, spelling) using a range of strategies, including dictation
- Sentence-level skills (grammar and punctuation) and vocabulary in context
- Composition skills using visual prompts, oral rehearsal, oral retelling
- Early editing skills, including re-reading and correcting with support
- Motivation for writing by providing ‘real’ purposes and audiences
- A range of effective teaching strategies such as modelled writing, focused group work, feedback.
Suitable audience: Teachers in Year 1. This course is particularly suited to ECTs, teachers new to Year 1 and any teachers looking for some new ideas to update and revitalise their teaching of writing.
