Leading on Writing in EYFS and KS1 (Zoom)

This online course is designed to equip English Subject Leaders with the knowledge and tools to lead strategic improvement in writing across EYFS and KS1. Rooted in the latest research from Ofsted, the recommendations from the new Writing Framework and in line with the new Ofsted Framework, this course focuses on establishing a coherent, evidence-informed approach to writing instruction from EYFS through to Year Two.

We will provide guidance on how to:

  • Use current research and published documents to identify priorities
  • Carry out an audit of current practice and write an action plan
  • Ensure consistency and high expectations in the teaching of writing from EYFS to Y2
  • Prioritise foundational skills of letter formation, handwriting, phonics and spelling
  • Develop explicit teaching of sentence level skills using a range of strategies such as dictation, ensuring ample opportunities for practice
  • Develop composition skills including oral composition, re-reading for sense and making simple edits, additions or revisions as appropriate
  • Build a culture of writing for pleasure and purpose
  • Support all pupils to build stamina, engagement, and independence as writers
  • Develop teacher subject knowledge, lead CPD and support teachers.

    Whether your school is refining its current approach for teaching in EYFS and KS1, or undertaking a more ambitious shift, this course will support you in leading impactful and sustainable change.

    Suitable audience: English Subject Leads, EYFS Leads, KS1 Leads and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead or is expecting an Ofsted Inspection in the next two years.
