A high-quality English curriculum in Years 1 and 2 is essential for ensuring that pupils secure the foundational knowledge they need to access the full curriculum as they move through primary school. This online course equips teachers with the knowledge, strategies, and classroom practices needed to establish secure early writing foundations in KS1. It focuses on the essential building blocks that enable pupils to become confident, fluent and independent writers.

We will provide guidance and support on:

• Prioritising the teaching of foundational skills including phonics, spelling, letter formation and handwriting
• Subject knowledge of grammar and punctuation to inform effective teaching of sentence construction skills
• Developing application of transcription skills using strategies such as dictation to remove cognitive load
• Developing composition skills, including both oral and written composition and teaching simple proof-reading and editing strategies
• Building a culture of writing for pleasure and purpose
• Supporting reluctant or emerging writers by identifying barriers to success and adapting teaching accordingly.

Suitable audience:  Year 1 and Year 2 teachers. This course is particularly suitable for ECTs, teachers who have moved year groups or teachers who have recently returned to teaching in KS1.
