This course will support you to develop an in-depth understanding of how to plan, teach and assess reading in Year 6 through whole class comprehension work and guided reading sessions.

  • a comprehensive overview of the reading test and all documents for end of KS2 teacher assessment
  • practical techniques for the teaching of the key areas of comprehension needed to succeed in the test
  • strategies to develop pupils’ ability to read and respond to a range of question ‘stems’ – both orally and in writing
  • ideas for systems for on-going assessment which inform next steps for teaching
  • an exploration of a wide variety of age-appropriate texts that will develop interest and understanding and will engage reluctant readers, especially boys
