Teaching Early Writing in EYFS (Zoom)

This two-part course will support EYFS practitioners to plan and teach the skills and knowledge for children to become confident ‘Early Writers’.

Part One: Readiness to Write in EYFS

A ‘readiness to write’ is essential for all children in both Nursery and Reception.  Part One will look at the importance of planning ‘pre-handwriting’ activities to ensure that all children are ‘ready to write’.

This session will provide:

  • An opportunity to examine how each strand of the area of learning for Physical Development is an essential part of ‘readiness to write’
  • An opportunity to look at a variety of activities and resources to support the development of core strength and co-ordination, gross and fine motor skills
  • Advice on how to set up activities in different areas of continuous provision which support ‘readiness to write’
  • A wealth of ideas to develop different aspects of physical development that may be barriers to children being ‘ready to write’.

Part Two: Moving from Mark Making to Letter Formation in EYFS

Part Two will look at the developmental milestones from mark-making to letter formation.  It will support you to plan multi-sensory, fun activities to ensure that all children develop accurate letter formation by the end of Reception.

This session will provide:

  • An understanding of the importance of mark making activities and how they prepare children for the introduction of letter formation
  • Advice on how to use a variety of mark making tools that support the development of comfortable grips
  • Opportunities to explore activities using a variety of easily-resourced mark making tools in all areas of continuous provision, including the use of the outdoor area
  • Ideas on using a multi-sensory approach to letter formation
  • Advice on how to move from mark making activities to letter formation activities.

This course made so much sense to me.  I now have a much better plan on how to use my areas of continuous provision.

I can’t wait to get back into school and starting planning!  I know my children are really going to benefit from the ideas I got today.

I think these new ideas are exactly what my class needs.  Thank you for all the lovely resources as well.

    Very informative!

I’ve learnt so much.  I am much clearer on my role now.
