Using Quality Picturebooks Effectively in KS2 (Zoom)

This online course will explore how quality picturebooks can be effectively used in KS2 to develop engagement, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing skills and writing motivation. This course is ideal for English Subject Leads so they can develop the use of picturebooks as part of a KS2 reading spine. It is also aimed at any teachers of KS2 classes.

During the session, we will explore a range of quality picturebooks and we will support you on how to select appropriate books for different year groups. We will use a selection of quality books to show how picturebooks can be used to:

  • Develop understanding and use of new vocabulary
  • Improve reading comprehension skills such as inference
  • Develop a range of grammatical skills in context
  • Provide effective models for story writing
  • Stimulate non-fiction writing with clear audience and purpose
  • Engage all children by reflecting realities and developing empathy
  • Motivate reluctant writers in KS2

Suitable audience:  Teachers in KS2, English Subject Leads and members of SMT. This course is particularly suited to anyone who is new to the role of Subject Lead, new to teaching in KS2 or is looking for a new approach.
