Phonics Training for Reception & Year One
This online course will support you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to deliver high quality phonics lessons.
Across the three sessions, we will include the following:
- subject knowledge and terminology
- progression in phonics from Phase 2 to Phase 5
- advice on how to ensure success at the end of EYFS
- advice on how to ensure success in the Year One Phonics Screening Check
- planning and teaching – including how to make lessons more engaging and multi-sensory
- assessment strategies that will support pace and progression
- suggestions for a range of activities which promote an interactive approach to teaching and learning phonics
We are running two courses concurrently to facilitate attendance for both teachers and Teaching Assistants in Year One and Reception. Please book onto one of the two options – it is not possible to attend some dates from one course, and some from the other.

Outstanding Small Group Reading in Reception and Year One
This online course will support you to plan and teach outstanding Small Group Reading sessions in Reception and Year One.
The two sessions will provide:
- a comprehensive overview of all relevant documents for the teaching of reading in the EYFS
- a structured approach to planning, teaching and assessing reading to ensure progression towards the new ELGs
- advice on matching phonic knowledge to decodable reading schemes
- support on ensuring effective transition from Reception to Y1
- advice on how to improve decoding skills as well as developing reading for meaning and comprehension

Success in the Year 1 Screening Check June 2022 - EXTRA DATES

How to use a quality text to plan and teach an effective narrative unit in Year 1
Over the two Zoom sessions, we will take you through the process of planning an effective narrative unit – ready to implement in the classroom.
We will help you to:
- use a high-quality children’s book to engage and motivate children to read and write
- discuss how to set appropriate objectives for the unit
- plan an effective teaching sequence
- use the reading week to teach decoding skills and comprehension
- plan a Talk for Writing version – story map
- plan and teach basic skills and grammar in the context of the story
- develop use of modelled writing and focused group work
- introduce independent proof-reading

Achieving ‘Expected’ in Reading and Writing at the end of KS1
This online course will provide you with a structured and supported approach to teaching the knowledge and skills that Year 2 children need to achieve the ‘Expected’ standard in reading and writing at the end of KS1.
We will help you to:
- ‘unpick’ the reading and writing ‘Expected’ standards and identify key priorities for ‘Catch-up’
- develop strategies which improve decoding skills – the journey to fluency
- plan a systematic approach to teaching reading comprehension, including how to read and respond to a range of question types, ‘stems’ and answer formats
