KS1 Courses
Outstanding One-to-One Reading, Group Reading and Guided Reading Sessions in Reception, KS1 and KS2 (Zoom)
This course will support you to plan and teach outstanding One-to-One Reading, Group Reading and Guided Reading sessions in Reception, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.
The course will provide:
- a comprehensive overview of all relevant documents for the teaching of early readers and struggling readers (lowest 20%)
- support on how to improve decoding skills as well as developing reading for meaning and comprehension for early readers in EYFS, KS1 and KS2
- advice on how to engage and motivate the very early readers in any class to learn how books work and to “have a go” at using newly acquired phonic knowledge.
- guidance on how to work with children 1-1, ensuring that this is not just ‘listening to’ but has an impact on the reading of the lowest 20% of children in all classes. This is particularly important for any school waiting for Ofsted as the Inspector will ask to observe someone reading with lowest 20% readers (and they will be particularly focusing on decoding using phonic knowledge).
- a structured approach to planning, teaching and assessing early readers in EYFS and Year One
- a structured approach to planning, teaching and assessing struggling readers (lowest 20%) in Year Two and Key Stage Two
- advice on matching phonic knowledge to decodable reading schemes
Suitable audience: Teachers and Teaching Assistants in Reception, KS1, KS2. This course is particularly suited to ECTs, teachers and TAs new to Reception or KS1 and/or teachers and TAs currently working with children who do not have sufficient reading skills to take part in a whole class Guided Reading group.

This has given me a fantastically informative intro to Y2 SATs. I now know what skills the children need to learn and how to deliver these in a more engaging manner. Debs never stopped giving advice – thanks!
The course was an eye opener to phonics for the screening check. Debs was fab. I would recommend the course to EYFS and Y2 to help develop knowledge.
This training will enable me to provide pupils with writing opportunities to achieve Greater Depth. Incredibly helpful and practical. Super answers to questions – thank you!
